Carschooling Physical Education and Health: Rest Stop Olympics

Rest stops along highways are great places to pull over and stretch your legs. Why not make the stop memorable and get some real physical exercise, too, by conducting a Rest Stop Olympics? Your kids will think of lots of ways to test everyone’s mettle. Although not absolutely necessary, it might be helpful to have a stopwatch or watch with a second hand, and a tape measure. Here are a few ideas to help you get started. Gather the family together in an area with plenty of room to move and then it’s off to the races. Award points or prizes in each of these categories (or in others your carschoolers create):

Who can run from one landmark to another in the least amount of time?

Who can skip from one location to the next in the shortest amount of time?

Who can hop on one foot for the longest time?

Who can stand in one spot and jump the farthest distance forward (without a running head start)?

Who can do the most jumping jacks in 30 seconds?

Who can do the most consecutive cartwheels in one minute?

Who can jump the highest?

Record the winners of your Rest Stop Olympics and each carschooler’s personal best time or distance in a notebook. Each time you stop for a Rest Stop Olympics, the athletes can try to beat their previous best scores.
