Carschooling Science: Stormy Weather

Driving in stormy weather can provide many learning opportunities including driver’s safety education. Talk to your kids about how vision is impaired by weather conditions and how the roads are slicker and more treacherous in rainy weather. Explain that cars deposit little drops of oil on the surface of the road. When the rain comes, it loosens the oil from the pavement and makes the road slippery. That can cause cars to slide and swerve. Tell them how important it is to adjust the car’s speed to maintain safety. These messages early in life will result in safer drivers in the future.

Do you live where it snows? Why do road crews put salt on the roads in winter? Salt lowers the temperature at which water freezes (32°F) and so prevents ice from forming that would make roads slippery and dangerous for motorists.
